UG 99 wheat stem rust poses an increasingly significant threat to wheat farmers in North Africa, the Middle East and the Southeastern United States.  A new, virulent stem rust race was identified in Uganda in 1999 and is now an epidemic threat to Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and is moving into Asia.

In a project funded by a Grand Challenges Grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Evolutionary Genomics used our Adapted Traits Platform to identify positively selected candidate genes that show promise in conferring resistance to multiple stem rust races.
